Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Treatment Fills Jamie With Renewed Hope

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma TreatmentAdenoid Cystic Carcinoma treatment is helping to restore Jamie’s health!

In April of 2017, Jamie, a nurse from Oregon, was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC). ACC is an “uncommon form of malignant neoplasm that arises within secretory glands, most commonly the major and minor salivary glands of the head and neck.” It has been described as “indolent but relentless.”

For Jamie, what followed was a year of struggling to find hope in a bleak situation.

“I had symptoms for several years and then I went to a few different doctors,” she shared. “I was misdiagnosed a couple times with the facial neuralgia because I was having pain in my face. There were a couple of medications that my doctors wanted me to go on, but I was a little apprehensive, so I started looking at some alternative treatments.

Even then, her symptoms got worse and eventually, she got a biopsy which confirmed there was cancer. She was advised that her main treatment options were surgery and radiation. “The plan was to have surgery to take out half of my face and reconstruct all of this,” Jamie said.

After the preliminary scan, they found “a mess” on her liver which they planned to remove through surgery. But further scans revealed metastatic spots on the insides of her abdominal wall and in her lungs. They aborted the surgery, and Jamie was left with hardly any options.

She added, “I remember asking my oncologist, ‘Is there anything else I can do, nutrition-wise? Is there anything I can be doing to help myself at home?’ At that point, you’re just reaching for straws trying to figure out something that you can do. I was told, ‘No, you know diet doesn’t matter.’ It leaves you feeling pretty helpless and hopeless.”

Jamie ended up in a clinical trial in February. But before that, she took charge of her own health. “I started doing research on natural medicine and some natural healing. I started doing juicing and changed my diet pretty radically. I made sure I was exercising and doing saunas,” she shared.

In July, after months of pain and extreme discomfort, she decided to finally pursue an alternative treatment option.

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Treatment provided under An Oasis of Healing’s Guidance

When Jamie first called An Oasis of Healing, she was expecting to get the “runaround.” But Andy, from the front desk, proved to be the exact opposite. “He spent a good half-hour with me on the phone, just answering some questions. I hung up the phone feeling like there’s more we can do. You’re not alone and you’re not a lost cause,” he explained.

Even before checking in, she was able to experience the personalized and attentive service of the Arizona-based team. She furthered, “I had a few extra questions and so I called and talked to Dr. Goodyear and he answered all of those questions for me and made the whole process so easy.”

After everything that she went through in the conventional treatment system, only to be left feeling worse, the feeling, and the fact, that there was a team behind her—preparing everything, making the big decisions and working on restoring her health—was crucial for Jamie.

She also appreciated the “nutrition-forward” approach of the treatment path. “You’re constantly not just eating food that is good for you, but you are learning about why it is good for cancer-fighting,” Jamie added. “Where else do you go where your doctor is readily available all the time? If you have a question, he’s walking around he’ll come and eat lunch with you answer questions. You just don’t get that in mainstream medicine. Here, the nurses are one step ahead of you all the time, just looking at everything.”

And even during days when she was not feeling that great, she knows that “everyone’s going to come alongside you, help you and carry you when you’re feeling weak.”

As Jamie prepared to leave An Oasis of Healing, she brings with her knowledge that will make a lasting impact on her life. More importantly, she goes home with a renewed sense of hope and health.

“I’m going home prepared and empowered to continue this life journey at home,” she said. “My cancer is getting better, it’s going away. It’s such a unique opportunity to be a part of something like this. I feel incredibly grateful.”

Recovery From Breast Cancer Joanne’s Story Of Healing

Recovery From Breast CancerJoanne has shared the heartwarming story of her recovery from breast cancer

In April of this year, Joanne, a 42-year-old wife, and mother, was diagnosed with breast cancer. It came as a shock to the family. And as expected, the conversations, especially with their kids, were difficult. Her recovery from breast cancer is detailed here.

“My kids would ask me questions like, ‘When do you become bald?’ Because that’s what they associate with cancer. Being bald and dying. Those were some tough conversations to have with our kids,” she shared.

Almost eight months later, on the 8th week of her treatment at An Oasis of Healing, she was in for other shocking news—her PET scan revealed that there was no active cancer. Joanne is cancer-free.

“We were thrilled with that and we were shocked,” she said. “Just as much as we were shocked to get the diagnosis, we are still in shock that I’m cancer-free. We’re coming out on the other side so healthy and grateful, especially going into the holiday season, to have that time with our kids.”

Quality of life in treatment

When she was diagnosed, Joanna started with a conventional treatment center. She “felt great” with the first doctor she spoke to after they agreed on the importance of nutrition in the healing process.

However, the other members of the medical team did not share that view. And when Joanne and her husband, Josh, walked around the facility and saw the patients, she felt it in her gut.

She explained, “That’s not the kind of treatment I want to have. And I didn’t want my kids to see me like that. That was my first take on the quality of life of a conventional treatment plan versus an integrative, more holistic plan that Oasis provides.”

Recovery From Breast Cancer Is Possible When The Right Healing Protocol Is Followed

Josh added, “It was quite a different picture when we walked into an Oasis of Healing. We looked at the other patients and they looked like they were on their journey of health and recovery.”

Prior to going to An Oasis of Healing, Joanne had already been on a health and wellness journey, learning about the body and its natural healing capabilities. She also started on the diet aspect of the program by going vegan, raw, organic and by juicing.

When she finally went to An Oasis of Healing, she immediately felt the difference—from the warmth and support of the team to the impressive facilities and staff to patient ratio. And because she had prepared her body, the nutrition aspect of the program, which can feel drastic for patients who are used to a less conscious diet and lifestyle, was “not too much of a shock” for Joanne.

Oasis School of Life

An Oasis of Healing has a unique and comprehensive cancer care program anchored on the Oasis School of Life—a precise curriculum designed to accomplish three goals: change a patient’s knowledge base about health and wellness; empower them to acquire skills to live a life of wellness; and enable them to experience long-term and sustainable health.

Part of the initial four-week course is steps to cleanse the body, mind, and spirit as well as hands-on training including how to prepare food without destroying nutrient content and creating palatable raw meals and beverages that enhance the body’s immune system and natural healing abilities.

This life-changing learning and healing journey have helped patients like Joanne to empower themselves to, not just heal from cancer, but also to prevent it from returning. “We’re just super grateful to be where we are now, celebrating and living life with our family and our friends,” she said.

Understanding The Link Between Cancer Cells And Glucose

Cancer Cells And GlucoseThe important things to know about cancer cells and glucose.

What is the link between cancer cells and glucose? The mitochondria require oxygen and glucose to produce ATP. Known as the powerhouses of the cells, mitochondria are organelles that absorb nutrients, break them down and create molecules for the cell to keep it full of energy.

ATP or adenosine triphosphate is the “energy currency of life.” It is a molecule that stores energy necessary for just about everything we do. ATP is produced using energy stored in the food that we eat in a process called respiration. Respiration is an efficient process for making ATP using food energy.

A typical animal cell has 1,000 to 2,000 mitochondria. According to Dr. Lodi, when a person has cancer, about 40 to 50% of the mitochondria are destroyed, and the cell can only make energy through fermentation.

Fermentation is an anaerobic cellular process wherein certain cells convert organic food into simpler compounds. In fermentation, cells use organic compounds such as carbohydrates whereas cells use molecular oxygen in respiration. Fermentation also generates ATP, albeit less compared to cellular respiration.

“Cancer cells are less efficient at energy production,” he said. “How do they get more energy? They need more fuel. And what’s the fuel? Glucose. Cancer cells need glucose. Cancer needs sugar.”

Dr. Lodi further explained that it is the reason why during a PET scan, patients are injected with radioactive glucose to see how the cells are quickly picking it up. A PET (positron emission tomography) scan is a nuclear imaging technique that shows how the body is functioning and reveals areas with “abnormal metabolic activity.”

Cancer Cells and Sugar

This, however, does not mean that patients should ditch carbohydrates altogether. All the carbohydrates we consume are broken down into simple sugars and are absorbed into the blood, thus increasing blood sugar levels. In response, the pancreas releases insulin which then travels to the bloodstream. Insulin is important in signaling the glucose to enter the cell, where it is used for energy.

Research shows that the effect of sugar in driving up insulin levels may affect the growth of cancer cells, as well as increase the risk of other chronic diseases. While insulin has an important role to play, it is crucial to manage it so that it does not fall too low or go too high. Regular physical activity or exercise is a great way to keep blood sugar levels in the normal range and clear excess blood sugar to avoid more insulin production than necessary.

It is also important to choose “quality carbohydrates” and to avoid high glycemic food like sugar, brown sugar, corn syrup and the “-oses” like fructose and sucrose. These can be found as ingredients in various processed food items we tend to buy often.

Sugary beverages like sweetened teas, lattes and soda are also best avoided whenever possible. As pointed out by Dr. Lodi in a previous video, water is a universal cure and as such, is the healthiest option for the body.

The Benefits Of Water Fasting

The Benefits Of Water FastingThe benefits of water fasting are being realized around the world!

These days, water fasting is popular among various health and wellness communities but in fact, the act of fasting has been around for thousands of years. It seems humans are starting to reconnect with the ultimate body cleanse, water fasting,  while animals have always done this, especially when they’re sick.

As far back as 5th century BCE, history shows that fasting has been used therapeutically, with Greek physician Hippocrates recommending abstinence from food or drink for certain patients. The first organized studies of fasting started in the latter part of the 19th century.

It was in the 20th century when, as an understanding of the human body evolved, fasting methods became “increasingly sophisticated.” Several methods of fasting were used to address different health and treatment needs.

For instance, water fasting was used to help treat chronic diseases together with exercise and enemas. Today, many doctors and medical experts continue to use water fasting as part of a treatment plan, especially for patients with chronic diseases.

In a new video, Dr. Thomas Lodi, renowned integrative oncology expert, noted that water fasting is the “ultimate whole body cleanse”.

Dr. Lodi explained, “Disease is the body’s response to an accumulation of toxins in the internal organs. And how do you rid the body of these toxins? You can do a juice cleanse, or you can do it with the most universally accepted detoxification method of them all—water.”

Aside from religious, and occasionally political motivations, fasting is mostly done for health-related reasons. But what are the actual benefits of water fasting?

Over the years, water fasting has been linked to health benefits including:

Promoting autophagy: Autophagy happens when old parts of the cells are broken down and recycled. This process can help cell survival by providing an alternative source of building blocks and substrates. Studies have found that autophagy can help protect against diseases like cancer by preventing damaged parts of the cells from accumulating and growing into cancer cells;

Lowering blood pressure: There are studies that show how a medically supervised water fast can help lower blood pressure for some patients;

Improving insulin and leptin sensitivity: Insulin helps the body store nutrients from the bloodstream. It also helps balance glucose levels in the blood. Leptin helps inhibit hunger and regulate energy balance. Research shows that water fasting can help make the body more “sensitive” to insulin and leptin. This means that the body will be more efficient in managing blood sugar and processing hunger signals, thus helping lower risk of obesity; and

Lowering the risk of chronic diseases: Some studies have shown a link between water fasting and a lower risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. In one study, 30 adults water fasted for 24 hours. After the fast, their levels of cholesterol and triglycerides were significantly lower.

“In many cases, we need not look far for effective ways to heal our body,” Dr. Lodi added. “Nature has given us a free and ultimate defense against diseases. Together with nutritional and lifestyle changes, guided water fasting can help put our health back on track.”
